A stiff shoulder. A gentler way forward.

Frozen shoulder, also called adhesive capsulitis, causes shoulder pain and restricted movement. Reaching, dressing and sleep can become difficult. Symptoms may change over months or years. Assessment helps distinguish it from other causes and select movement and pain-management options suited to your current symptoms.

Frozen Shoulder: What should I know?

Frozen shoulder, also called adhesive capsulitis, causes shoulder pain and restricted movement. Reaching, dressing and sleep can become difficult. Symptoms may change over months or years. Assessment helps distinguish it from other causes and select movement and pain-management options suited to your current symptoms.

What might you notice?

Symptoms can overlap with other conditions. An assessment helps clarify what needs attention.

01

Dressing and reaching

Putting on clothes, washing your hair or reaching behind your back may become difficult. Tell us which task matters most to you.

02

Sleep interrupted

Shoulder pain may disturb sleep, particularly during a more painful period. Discuss persistent sleep loss and pain relief with your healthcare team.

03

Movement feels limited

The shoulder can feel stiff when you move it yourself and when a clinician gently assists it. This pattern still needs examination.

Assessment & shared decisions

Your symptoms. Your daily life. Your plan.

We discuss how symptoms began, sleep, diabetes, previous injury or surgery and your daily goals. With consent, assessment compares comfortable active and assisted movement and checks for other explanations.

The plan follows how irritable the shoulder is. During pain-dominant periods, gentle movement and symptom management may come first; mobility and strength work can progress as tolerated. A doctor decides whether imaging or other treatment is needed.

  • Private assessment with a female physiotherapist
  • Discuss your goals and relevant health history
  • Understand when medical review is needed

A pathway shaped around you.

These are flexible goals, not fixed weeks or a promise of recovery.

  1. 01

    Understand & assess

Discuss your symptoms and goals. Check warning signs and agree an appropriate starting point.

  2. 02

    Move & build

Adapt everyday activity and practise selected movement or strength work. Adjust the plan to your response.

  3. 03

    Review & continue

Review useful changes in daily function, refine the home plan and seek further assessment when needed.

Know when to seek help

Some symptoms need medical care first.

Seek emergency care immediately for:

  • Shoulder or arm pain with chest pressure, breathlessness, sweating or faintness needs immediate emergency care.
  • After an injury, a visibly deformed shoulder or a cold, pale or blue hand needs emergency assessment. Do not try to put the joint back yourself.

Ask for prompt medical assessment · 1

Seek prompt medical care for sudden severe pain, inability to move the arm, marked swelling, fever or feeling unwell.

Ask for prompt medical assessment · 2

Persistent numbness, new weakness or worsening pain and stiffness need medical assessment rather than increasingly forceful stretching.

Your questions, answered.

Is every stiff shoulder a frozen shoulder?

No. Arthritis, injury and other shoulder problems can also limit movement. Diagnosis needs your history and an examination; tests are selected when needed.

Should I force my shoulder to loosen it?

No. Exercises should match your symptoms and tolerance. Ask a clinician to demonstrate an appropriate movement and adjust the plan if pain or sleep worsens.

Does diabetes change the plan?

Tell your physiotherapist and doctor about diabetes and ongoing treatment. It is associated with frozen shoulder and may affect progress or treatment decisions, so keep your usual diabetes follow-up.

How long will improvement take?

There is no single timetable. Your symptoms, health, daily demands and response guide progress. Reviews focus on useful changes in function and whether the plan needs adjustment.

What should I bring to an assessment?

Bring relevant reports, a medication list and details of previous care if available. Tell us which daily tasks are difficult and any new or worsening symptoms.
